Cancers of the brain and nervous system account for 1,7% of new cancers and 2.1% of cancer deaths. This represents 189,000 new cases and 142,000 deaths annually in the world. It is one of the leading causes of cancer death in the age bracket 20 to 30 years. Brain tumours account for 85-90% of all primary CNS tumours. The most common brain tumours are the gliomas, which account for 77% of all malignant brain tumours, the most virulent form, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), constitutes approximately 51% of all gliomas.
